SCHWARZ, Hans
Hans Schwartz was born in Vienna, Austria in 1922. He attended the local art school where he was taught by Schiele, Kokoshka and Bonnard. His mother died when he was twelve years old and his father later died in Auschwitz concentration camp. As an orphaned teenager, he was expelled by the Nazis in 1938 and was living in Birmingham by 1939. In the years 1941-43, he attended the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts. After leaving the art school, he joined a commercial art studio. Whilst working as a commercial artist and a free lance illustrator, he also taught part-time in various art schools till 1966. In 1964 he gave up graphic design to concentrate on painting and sculpture full time. He had several books published including ‘Figure Painting’, ‘Colour for the Artist’ etc. He was a member of the New English Art Club; Royal Watercolour Society; His was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery to paint portraits of Nikolaus Pevsner, Joe Gormley and Tom Jackson. He lived in London.
