JONES, David
Jones was born in 1895 and studied at Camberwell. In 1919 he attended Westminster School of Art and studied under Bayes and Meninsky where he was influenced by Blake and El Greco. In 1921 he made his first visit to Eric Gill in Ditchling, where he later moved and joined The Third Order of Joseph and St Dominic, learning wood engraving from Desmond Chute. In 1924 he moved to North Wales with Gill and they first exhibited jointly at St Georges Gallery in 1927. He is represented in numerous public collections including the Tate. Jones' spiritual vision often linked Christian and mythological iconography. Plagued by numerous breakdowns and depression, Jones died in 1974.
